What to See Near the Lodge

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Lawton

The best starting point for first-time visitors to the refuge. Pick up a trail map, learn about the bison herd, and watch the longhorns graze just outside. The center sits at the edge of 59,000 acres of protected land.

Old Fort Sill

Lawton

One of the few active U.S. Army posts that still has its original frontier-era buildings intact. Walk the historic grounds, visit the artillery museum, and get a sense of how the southern plains were shaped in the 1800s. Free to enter.

Geronimo's Grave

Fort Sill

The Apache leader Geronimo died at Fort Sill in 1909 and is buried in the post cemetery at Beef Creek Apache Cemetery. A quiet, sobering stop that puts the history of the region in sharp relief.

Medicine Creek

Medicine Park

The creek runs right through the heart of Medicine Park, shallow enough to wade and lined with the cobblestone that gives the town its character. Kids love it. Bring sandals and plan to linger.
