Medicine Park was founded in 1908 by U.S. Senator Elmer Thomas as Oklahoma's first planned resort town. Built along spring-fed Medicine Creek using locally quarried red cobblestones, it drew soldiers from Fort Sill, summer families, musicians, and during Prohibition, a colorful cast of outlaws. By mid-century it had gone quiet. In the 1990s a restoration movement brought it back. Today the cobblestone buildings still stand, the creek still runs cold, and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge sits just up the road.
